Micheál Neeson was only 13 when he lost his star mother
Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson’s love story began on Broadway in 1993, when they starred together in Anna Christie. The chemistry between them was undeniable, even though Richardson was married at the time.
Her marriage soon ended, and in 1994 she wed Neeson. The pair went on to have two sons, Micheál and Daniel, and built a life together filled with deep affection.
Richardson once laughed off Neeson’s reputation as a ladies’ man, telling Country Living: “I’m glad that women fall in love with him because I know why.” Their bond only grew after marriage, especially as they embraced parenthood.
The couple welcomed their first son in 1995 and their second just 18 months later. Their relationship appeared unshakable, strengthened by their shared joy in raising a family.
Tragedy struck in 2009 when Richardson suffered a head injury in a skiing accident. At first she dismissed it as minor, but her condition quickly worsened. Doctors declared her brain dead, and Neeson made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support, honoring a promise they had once made.
Their eldest son, Micheál, later followed in his parents’ footsteps as an actor, appearing in films and shows such as Anchorman 2, Vox Lux, Big Dogs, and Paradise.
Years later, Micheál chose to change his surname to Richardson in tribute to his mother. “It was mostly a tribute to my mother and a way to carry her with me,” he told The Times. The gesture deeply touched Neeson, as well as Natasha’s mother and sisters.
Since then, Micheál has carved out his own acting career, even starring alongside his father in Cold Pursuit and Made in Italy. He continues to honor his mother’s legacy while making his own mark on the screen.
